Resources (last updated 10/05/05)

These are some of the people and places we've used during our remodelling projects. If you have had good or bad experiences with these people or have any other recommendations, I'd love to hear about it. Please email me at above email address.

  • Siding
  • Glass
    • WJ Bank Glass Co. 1401 Old County Road. San Carlos CA 94070
We gotten quite a few things here including shower doors and replacement bedroom windows. For our bedrooms we used Milgard aluminum block frames to replace our original bedroom windows. It was relatively easy to do since they were the same width. Needless to say, it's wonderful having windows that actually open and close easily. They're dual pane and low-E.

    • Home Depot East Palo Alto
We replaced the closet doors in our first and master bedroom with triple-track mirrored doors (Contractor's Wardrobe brand) that we special ordered from here. The triple-track allows us to open the closet doors 2/3's of the way (and they don't fall off like the original Eichler closet doors!).

    • Franciscan Glass 100 San Antonio Circle Mountain View, CA 94040 (650)948-6666
      www.franciscanglass.com/contactus.html
We got our first set of closet doors here; don't remember why we got the second set from Home Depot.

    • Palo Alto Glass 4085 Transport Street
      Palo Alto, CA 94303
      Phone: (650) 494-7000
      www.paloaltoglass.com
Good people to talk to when you finally get around to biting the bullet and replacing all those single pane windows!

  • Granite/Marble/Stone
    • Alpha Granite & Marble 590 Martin Ave Santa Clara, CA 95050-2954 (408) 855-0950
We haven't purchased anything from them but their showroom is fantastic.

    • Plamar USA Inc. Marble and Granite Fabrication and Installation 1319 E. Moffett Park Dr. Sunnyvale, CA 94089 Phone: (408) 744 0694
Apparently they'ved moved from Coleman in San Jose. Great prices, great value, good work. Not for the perfectionist -- they placed the holes for the soap dispensers too far away ('We always do it this way') and, after we had the templates laid out, they tried to save on granite to putting the seam in a different place than we had templated, so we ended up with one pretty ugly unmatching seam, but.... would probably use them again anyway since their prices were so much lower than anybody else and they were quick and easy to work with. Home Expo uses them -- cut out the middleman; cut out the price increase.

  • Cultured Granite/Marble
    • Marbled Elegance 2008 Martin Ave Santa Clara, CA 95050
I DO NOT recommend this place. We got the cultured granite for our first bathroom here. They had to remake the pieces several times due to poor quality and then they wouldn't return our phone calls. I was almost to the point of picketing their store I was so upset. We have another friend who had the similar issues with them and she just gave up and used the less-than-perfect pieces. A truly frustrating experience.

    • South Bay Marble This showroom used to be on Industrial in San Carlos but couldn't I find their address anymore. We got the cultured granite for our second bathroom here after dealing with Marbled Elegance -- a MUCH better experience.

  • Cabinets
    • Gilmans Cabinets and Screens 1031 E. Hillsdale Blvd. Foster City, CA 94404 Phone: 650-286-0433
      www.gilmanscreens-kitchens.com
We got cabinets for both our bathrooms and for above the washer/dryer at the Foster City store. There's another store in Mountain View.

    • Danmar Cabinet Co. 12 41st Ave., San Mateo; (650) 571-1230
We got our kitchen cabinets here after getting extremely frustrated trying to order from Home Expo. Good prices on Bertch, nice to deal with, good advice.

    • Cabinet World 1501 Laurel Street San Carlos CA 94070 Phone: (650)592-8020
We ended up getting our cabinets elsewhere, but they did give us a great price quote and very helpful advice.

  • Hardware
    • Peninsula Hardware 2676 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, 94306 - (650) 325-3491
Great when you need a single bolt, some weird plumbing part, or someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

    • Palo Alto Hardware 904 High St, Palo Alto, 94301
I really like the fact that you can get single parts for sprinkler systems here (e.g., dripper plugs, drippers). Support your local hardware store!

  • Pavers
    • Pacific Interlock 1193 B South De Anza Blvd San Jose, CA 95129 408.257.3645 Tel
      www.pacinterlock.com
      NOT recommended.
Used to be a great company but they screwed up our last two orders, so am less enamoured of them at the present.

    • Los Altos Garden Supply 4730 El Camino Real, Los Altos, 94022 - (650) 948-2218
These people carry the Pacific Interlock Products (for less than Pacific Interlock) and also several other brands.

  • Plumbing/Heating
    • William Lipp Hydronics 745 2ND Ave Redwood City, CA 94063-3901 (650) 327-1943
We had him do the original inspection on our house and the leak detection when our cats discovered a leak. His name is pretty much synonymous with radiant heating systems.

    • Dan Salzberg's Radiant Heating Service Mountain View, CA 94040 - Map (650) 965-3777
Our home warranty plan turned us onto Dan. Really wonderful guy to deal with. Heating/furnace repairs.

    • Barron Park Plumbing Supply 377 San Antonio Rd, Mountain View, CA 94040 (650) 948-7160

  • Hauling
    • Aladdin Hauling 580 Crespi Dr Pacifica CA 94044-3347 650-222-4763
yard clean-up, concrete/ dirt removal. They removed our old concrete patio for slightly more than it would have cost us to rent a concrete dumpster (we broke it up). We used them again for demolition of our driveway. They were prompt and did an EXCELLENT job.

    • Peninsula Hauling & Demo 650-596-8105.
They were late for the estimate on our driveway demolition but our neighbor highly recommends them. They did his driveway demolition.

  • Landscaping Materials
    • Lyngso 19 Seaport Blvd, Redwood City, CA 94063 http://www.lyngsogarden.com For all your rock, mini-mulch, gravel, sand, rhododendron mix needs. My husband really likes renting their dump trucks.

    • Mountain View Garden Ctr (650) 968-4817 50 Centre St Mountain View, CA 94041
Easier to deal with than Lyngso due to their smaller size and shorter lines but less selection and not quite the Lyngso 'experience'.

  • Nurseries
    • Wegman's 492 Woodside Road Redwood City, CA 94061 P: 650.368.5908
      http://www.wegmansnursery.com
Probaby my favorite nursery. Wonderful bare root trees (both fruit and landscaping) in early spring.

    • Yamagami's Nursery 1361 S. De Anza Blvd. Cupertino, CA 95014
      Telephone 408-252-3347
http://www.yamagamisnursery.com/ If I had more money I'd go here more often.

    • Summerwinds
725 San Antonio Road, (at Middlefield Rd), Palo Alto (also a Mountain View branch)
      (650)493-5136
      http://www.summerwindsca.com
Mostly has stuff that's in season. Great for annuals and herbs.

    • Roger Reynolds Nursery
      133 Encinal Ave
      Menlo Park, CA 94025
      (650) 322-8914
      (650) 323-5612
      http://www.rogerreynoldsnursery.com
Also does classes in pruning, etc. Pricey but a wonderful place.
    • Regan's 4268 Decoto Rd, Fremont, 94555 - (510) 797-3222
      http://www.regannursery.com
Good supply of trees, bare-roots. Lots of acreage.

    • Los Altos Garden Supply 4730 El Camino Real, Los Altos, 94022 - (650) 948-2218
Great plants and the cheapest plastic bend-a-board we've found.

  • Flooring
    • Stuart Floor Company 1455 Veterans Blvd, Redwood City, 94063 - (650) 369-2506
Good selection and a pleasure to deal with.

    • Art Craft Carpet and Linoleum 858 San Antonio Ave, Palo Alto, 94303
An 'out of the way place' with a good selection and a very tiny showroom.

    • Stanford Carpet 3780 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA 9430
This is another 'NOT RECOMMENDED'. Incredibly poor installation (exposed and overlapping seams), bad attitude, refused to replace defective carpeting until we threatened his contractors license. He eventually made good on the installation, but it took months of frustration and threats.

    • Quality Discount tile 3457 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, 94306 - (650) 354-8140

    • Chico Tile? Used to be on Industrial in San Carlos but possibly no longer there.
$$$$. Great showroom, great selection, high prices. Incredible selection of travertine. If money were no object....

  • Kitchen Appliances
    • Standards of Excellence (formerly McPhails Appliance) 1720 Ringwood Avenue San Jose, CA 95131 Phone: (408) 907-3800
      Great prices, beautiful showroom.

    • University Appliance 500 Martin Avenue Santa Clara, CA 95050 Phone: (408) 496-0500 www.universityelectric.com
Excellent prices, showroom leaves a bit to be desired, especially after McPhails. This is where we got our kitchen appliances.

  • Roofers
    • Responsible Roofing
NOT recommended. They apparently weren't responsible enough when they re-foamed our next-door neighbor's roof in the wind (didn't bother to use the plastic they brought with them) so my 6-month-old hand-washed-only Acura got over-sprayed. I DID end up getting a rather large insurance settlement; however, I'd rather have the clear-coat on my car.
