Backyard Patio Project

In early spring of 2004 we started a project to replace the cracked patio slab in our backyard with pavers.
We decided to make the area which had been taken up by the old patio smaller and extend the paved area to the side yard which was shadier and a nicer place to 'hang out'.

<== First Erik got his sledge hammer after a particularly unpleasant day at work and made good time in breaking up the old patio.

Then we hammered in stakes to figure out how far we had to dig. ==>
Preexcavation.
<== Finally, after digging tons of dirt and wheel-barrowing it to the dumpster we rented which was (unfortunately) out front in the street, we were ready to start filling the hole back in.

We rented a dumptruck from Lyngso... ==>
<== and dumped several tons of fill rock into the driveway.

Next the fill was hauled to the backyard by wheelbarrow and spread to the right thickness.

The pavers arrived from the paver place. ==>
Yours truly was moving tons of pavers and stacking them in the back and side yards where we could get to them without walking over the screed sand while Erik was spreading the sand. The sand, of course, had to be hauled in from Lyngso in a dumptruck and carted to the backyard)

<==Pavers piled, gravel evened....

Getting the pipes set up for screeding.==>
<== Laying the pavers

Cutting the pavers ==>
<== more cutting...

Landscaping ==>
<==DONE!

At the end of the project I calculated how much material we had hauled from the front to the back yard and I think it was something like 11 tons. Entire project took about 5-6 weeks (while both of us were working full time).==>
